Amerikandoggu (Japanese Corn Dog)
Fluffier, sweeter, and more tender than the American original — Japan's corn dog deserves its own story.
Ingredients
| 1/2 cup (60g) | all-purpose flour | |
| 1/2 cup (80g) | cornmeal | |
| 1 tablespoon | 15 ml | sugar |
| 1 teaspoon | 5 ml | baking powder |
| 1/4 teaspoon | 1.3 ml | salt |
| 1 | egg | |
| 1/2 cup (120ml) | milk | |
| 4 | frankfurters or sausages | |
| 4 | wooden skewers | |
| — | vegetable oil for frying |
Instructions
- Insert skewers into each sausage lengthwise. Pat dry.
- Whisk flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt together. Add egg and milk and mix until smooth.
- Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a tall pot or container that fits the sausage.
- Dip each sausage into the batter, letting excess drip off.
- Fry one at a time for 3–4 minutes, turning, until golden and puffed.
- Drain and serve immediately with ketchup and mustard.
