Grafting Bonsai

Grafting is a bonsai propagation and shaping technique in which a shoot or scion of the same species is joined to a host (stock) tree so the two grow together. It is used to add branches or roots where they are wanted, to place foliage in bare areas of the design, or to encourage root growth as part of nebari cultivation. The scion and stock are cut cleanly, matched so their cambium layers touch, then bound and sealed until the tissues fuse and the young plant takes root or unites with the host.
