Brown Rice

🍳 Cook: 40 min

Ingredients

1 cup240 mlBrown rice (long grain or short grain)
1¼ cup300 mlWater
a sprinkleSalt

Instructions

Cook time: 40 to 50 minutes (depending on your rice cooker). Rest time: 10 minutes (do not skip this).

The five or less things: One cup / 2.5 dl of brown rice. Long grain or short grain. The rice does not care. Brown rice is brown rice. It is not trying to be white rice. It has its own identity. One and a quarter cups / 3.25 dl of water. Brown rice needs more water than white rice. It is thirstier. It has a tougher outer layer. Think of it as the rice that goes to the gym. It needs extra hydration. A sprinkle of salt. Adds flavor. Do not skip it. Brown rice needs all the help it can get. It is healthy. It is wholesome. It is also a little boring without salt. Add the salt.

Directions:

  1. Rinse the rice in the inner pot. Add water, swirl, and pour it out. Do this a few times. The water will still be a little cloudy. That is fine. Brown rice has more starch. It is the rebel of the rice family. It does not follow the rules. It does not care about your expectations.
  2. Add the measured water and salt. Give it one stir. Just enough to combine. Over-stirring makes glue. Glue is not rice. Do not make glue.
  3. Close the lid. Press the cook button. Brown rice takes longer than white rice. It is not in a hurry. Neither should you be. Go do something else. Read a book. Take a nap. Contemplate your life choices. The rice will be ready when it is ready.
  4. When it beeps, let it sit for 10 minutes with the lid closed. This is not optional. The rice will be chewy if you skip this step. Chewy rice is not the goal. Chewy rice is a warning sign. Be patient.
  5. Open the lid. Fluff with a fork. Brown rice is denser than white rice. It will not be as fluffy. That is normal. It has more fiber. Your body will thank you. Your jaw might also thank you. It is not tough. It is just... substantial.
  6. Serve hot. Or keep it warm for later. It will wait for you. It is patient. Unlike your hungry stomach.

Note: Brown rice is healthier than white rice. More fiber. More nutrients. Longer cooking time. That is the tradeoff. Swap the water for broth for extra flavor. Add herbs for variety. Add a bay leaf for aroma. Add a clove of garlic for depth. The rice is your canvas. The flavors are your paint. Go make something healthy. Or just make rice. That is enough. Your body will thank you. Eventually.
