Cheddar Cheese Basil Bread Prep time is 10 minutes or less

Grilled cheese sandwiches, cheese-topped garlic bread, Welsh rarebit, and cheese fondues are all about bread and melted cheese, so why not put the cheese right in the bread? This recipe ensures there is a taste of Cheddar in every bite. The cheese is added with all the other ingredients, so it blends in rather than baking in chunks.

8 SLICES / 1 POUND 2/3 cup milk, at 80°F to 90°F 2 teaspoons melted butter, cooled 2 teaspoons sugar 2/3 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups white bread flour 1 teaspoon bread machine or active dry yeast

  1. Place the ingredients in your bread machine as recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Program the machine for Basic/White bread, select light or medium crust, and press Start.
  3. When the loaf is done, remove the bucket from the machine.
  4. Let the loaf cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Gently shake the bucket to remove the loaf, and turn it out onto a rack to cool.

Ingredient tip: Aged Cheddar is not the same as sharp Cheddar, although aging the cheese gives it a very distinctive flavor. You can substitute Cheddar cheese that has been aged at least 2 years for sharp Cheddar in this bread.
