Coffee Rubbed Homemade Burgers

Juicy Angus beef patties coated in a coffee dry rub, grilled and served with a cola-and-coffee BBQ sauce, bacon and lettuce.

Ingredients

1½ Tbsp23 mlground coffee
2 lbs905 gAngus ground beef 85/15
2 Tbsp30 mlheavy cream
1 tsp5 mlkosher salt
½ tsp2.5 mlblack pepper
brioche or pretzel buns
lettuce
8 slicescooked bacon slices
2 Tbsp30 mlbutter
½yellow onion
3 clovesgarlic
½ cup120 mlketchup
1½ Tbsp23 mltomato paste
6 oz170 gDr Pepper
¼ cup60 mlapple cider vinegar
2½ Tbsp38 mlWorcestershire sauce
¼ cup60 mlbrown sugar
1 tsp5 mlancho chile powder
3 Tbsp45 mlbrewed coffee

Instructions

  1. Mix all dry rub ingredients in a small bowl; set aside.
  2. Melt butter over medium heat, sauté onion and garlic 6-8 minutes until soft. Add remaining sauce ingredients, bring to a low boil, then simmer 20 minutes until thickened. Puree in a blender and cool.
  3. Mix beef, cream, salt and pepper; divide into 6 patties (~⅓ lb each) and press a divot in the centre of each.
  4. Rub coffee seasoning over both sides. Preheat grill to medium-high, lightly oil the grates and grill about 5 minutes per side to desired doneness; toast the buns on the grill.
  5. Spread BBQ sauce on both buns, layer lettuce, patty, more sauce and bacon; top with the bun.
