Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to tropical Asia, grown for its aromatic, pungent rhizome.

Situation: Warm, bright spot out of direct midday sun; needs high humidity and temperatures above 20 C. Substrate: Loose, rich, well-draining potting soil. Planting: Plant a piece of fresh rhizome with a visible bud just below the soil surface in a wide, shallow pot. Watering, feeding: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged; feed lightly during the growing season. Harvest: The rhizome can be dug up after 8-10 months, once the leaves begin to die back. Propagation: By division of the rhizome.
