A troubleshooting guide for common rice cooker problems.

Ingredients

Instructions

The rice is undercooked and crunchy. You did not use enough water. Or you opened the lid too early. Add a quarter cup of water. Close the lid. Press cook again. Check after 5 minutes. Repeat until the rice is soft. Crunchy rice is fixable. Burnt rice is not.

The rice is overcooked and mushy. You added too much water. Next time, use less. For this batch, eat it anyway. Mushy rice is still rice. It is just sad rice. Add it to soup. Make it into porridge. Do not throw it away. It is still food.

The rice is burnt on the bottom. You left it on keep warm too long. Or your rice cooker runs hot. Scrape off the top layer. Eat that. Throw away the burnt layer. Next time, turn it off sooner. Your rice cooker is not a slow cooker. It does not want to be on all day.

The lid popped open during cooking. You did not close it properly. Or too much steam built up. Turn off the rice cooker. Let it cool. Close the lid firmly. Start over. The rice will be fine. It might be a little softer. That is fine.

The rice cooker overflowed. You added too much rice or too much water. The pot bubbled over. Clean up the mess. Next time, use less. The rice cooker is not a magician. It has limits.

You forgot to plug it in. You came back to cold rice and water. Unplug it. Plug it in. Press cook. Start over. The rice will be fine. It just took a little longer. You learned a lesson. You will not forget again. Probably.

You used the wrong measuring cup. The rice cooker comes with its own cup. It is not a standard cup. Use the cup that came with the machine. If you lost it, use ¾ of a standard cup for every cup of rice. Or buy a new one. They are cheap.

You washed the inner pot with steel wool. You scratched the nonstick coating. The rice will stick from now on. Buy a new inner pot. They are available online. Or live with sticky rice. Sticky rice is fine. It is just harder to clean.

You dropped the inner pot. It is dented. It still works. The dent might cause hot spots. The rice might cook unevenly. It is still safe. Use it. If it bothers you, buy a new one.

You set off the smoke alarm. Something burned. Open a window. Wave a towel at the alarm. Turn off the rice cooker. Let it cool. Clean the burnt bits. Next time, use less heat. Or less time. Or both.

Nothing worked and you are still hungry. Take a break. Step away from the rice cooker. Eat a piece of fruit. Drink some water. Come back later and try again. The rice cooker will still be there. It is patient.

Cooking is just heating things until they taste good. Sometimes it takes two tries. Sometimes three. That is not failure. That is learning.

Now go eat something. Whatever you have. Whatever works. The rice cooker will wait for you.
