
Miso Yaki Onigiri (Grilled Rice Balls)
Miso-butter flavoured grilled Japanese rice balls. Great as a crowd-pleasing appetiser at a weekend BBQ - grill on a flat grill pan, frying pan or the BBQ.

Ingredients
| 2 cups | 480 ml | uncooked rice |
| 1 tbsp | 15 ml | butter |
| 1/2 tbsp | 7.5 ml | miso |
| 1 tsp | 5 ml | mirin |
| 1 tsp | 5 ml | sake |
| 1 tsp | 5 ml | sugar |
| 1 tsp | 5 ml | water |
| — | shiso leaves, sesame seeds and chives (for garnish) |
Instructions
- Cook the rice following the instructions for your rice cooker.
- While the rice cooks, put all the miso paste ingredients (miso, mirin, sake, sugar and water) together in a bowl and mix well.
- Divide the cooked rice into 6 portions.
- Shape and squish each portion of rice in a piece of cling wrap into a triangle shape.
- Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add the butter.
- Grill the onigiri for about 1 minute on each side, coating them with the butter.
- Brush the miso paste over each side of the rice balls and grill each side until crispy.
- Serve with the shiso, sesame seeds and chives garnish.
Note: This recipe assumes you have cooked rice pre-prepared; time to cook the rice is not included in the estimated cooking time.
